A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti has ordered the remand of 20-year-old Joy Ikoja for allegedly attempting to sever her boyfriend’s genitals.
The Ekiti State Police Command brought Ikoja before the court on charges of unlawfully injuring Ibrahim Usman by reportedly tearing his scrotal sac.
During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Inspector Adeboye Adesegun stated that the incident occurred on April 12 around 8:00 p.m. in the Irona area of Ado-Ekiti. He alleged that Ikoja not only caused severe injury to Usman but also behaved in a manner that could disturb public peace.
The charges against the defendant fall under Sections 186, 255, 256(a), and 181(d) of the Ekiti State Criminal Laws of 2021.
Defense counsel, Barrister David Ogbede, appealed for bail, arguing that Ikoja is presumed innocent until proven guilty and would not abscond if released.
However, the prosecutor objected, expressing concerns about the defendant potentially fleeing. He pointed out discrepancies in her identity, noting that she was previously involved in a different case that was dismissed.
Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola denied the bail request and ordered Ikoja to be held in custody at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to April 22 for continuation of the hearing.
