Tragedy struck at Ogun State Television (OGTV), Abeokuta, on Monday as a veteran journalist, Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, collapsed and died while preparing for her afternoon shift at the station.

Her passing was confirmed in a statement by Mr. Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council. Agbakaizu, who was 52 years old, had previously served as an Ex-Officio member of the Council.

According to the NUJ statement, Mrs. Agbakaizu suddenly slumped while getting ready for duty. Despite prompt efforts to save her life, she was declared dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

The union described her as a seasoned journalist and committed member of the profession. She was formerly the Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel and played an important role in the executive committee led by Wale Olanrewaju.

“Her energy, dedication, and passion for journalism left a lasting impression. Her death has created a significant void that will be deeply felt,” the statement read.

She is survived by her two children, her elderly mother, and numerous colleagues and friends who are mourning her sudden departure.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ogun State chapter, also expressed deep sorrow over her passing. In a condolence message signed by Chairperson Sekinat Salam, the association said the news came as a painful shock.

Salam described Agbakaizu as a devoted and exemplary professional, noting that her loss is particularly difficult given the wisdom and experience she brought to her roles.

“Her compassion, dedication to journalism, and genuine care for others made her a cherished member of our community,” the NAWOJ statement said. “Even though she left at the age of 52, her legacy of service to God, humanity, and the profession will never be forgotten.”

The statement concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul and divine comfort for the loved ones she left behind.
