Five people lost their lives and nine others were injured on Monday following a series of road accidents along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued from Abeokuta.

According to Okpe, one of the crashes involved a yellow Mazda bus and an ash-colored Howo truck near the Car Park C area of the expressway. The truck reportedly suffered a brake failure, lost control, and collided with the bus, which was attempting to make a turn.

She stated: “The accident involved 12 individuals—seven men and five women. Sadly, two male and three female adults lost their lives, while five male and two female adults sustained injuries.”

The injured victims were transported to Famobis Hospital in Mowe for medical attention, while the deceased were taken to Idera Mortuary. Okpe identified excessive speed, brake failure, and loss of control by the truck driver as contributing factors to the crash.

In a separate incident that occurred the same day near the NASFAT junction on the expressway, a fuel tanker overturned while trying to navigate a turn. The tanker spilled its contents and caught fire, injuring two people and burning six vehicles, including four trucks, a bus, and a Toyota Camry.

An eyewitness reported that the tanker tipped over during the turn, releasing fuel that quickly ignited. The resulting fire caused a major traffic gridlock on both sides of the expressway.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the two injuries and noted that initial plans to transport the victims to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) were delayed due to the traffic congestion. The injured were instead taken to Famobis Hospital in Lotto.

In yet another incident along the same route, traffic came to a standstill around noon after two separate trucks toppled—one carrying fuel and the other transporting stones—near the Ogere bridge. Emergency services, including firefighters from the Ogun State government, were deployed to the scene.

Motorists expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, with some resorting to alternate routes to avoid the congestion.
