Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a man, Alexander Peter, for allegedly killing his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, using a machete.
The tragic incident happened in Ikot Inyang, a village in the Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing held Thursday at the command headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo. He stated that the suspect was apprehended on June 10 and that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
“This disturbing case occurred in Ikot Inyang village, where the suspect reportedly attacked his mother with a machete, resulting in her death,” CP Azare said. “Our officers are thoroughly investigating to uncover what led to such a shocking crime.”
Azare also reported that within the last six weeks, the command had arrested 54 individuals for various offenses across the state and recovered more than 50 firearms along with several rounds of ammunition.
The killing has left many in the local community stunned, as residents react to the disturbing news of a mother allegedly murdered by her own son.
Police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation develops.
