A tragic event unfolded in the Bazabe Quarters of Albasu Local Government Area, Kano State, where two men lost their lives while trying to recover a mobile phone that had fallen into a pit latrine.

This incident was confirmed in a statement released by the Kano State Fire Service, Takai branch, through its Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Fire Operations (ACFO) Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the Takai Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 11:16 a.m. from one Inspector Auwalu, reporting that two individuals had fallen into a toilet pit.

The report explained that the first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhd, entered the pit latrine in an attempt to retrieve his mobile phone—locally known as Indon Kauye—which had accidentally slipped into the hole.

Tragically, Muhd was unable to exit the pit. In a bid to save him, another man, Ibrahim Inuwa, also believed to be around 40 years old, descended into the latrine. He used a rope in an attempt to pull Muhd out but lost consciousness during the process.

“Both men were rescued in an unconscious state and later pronounced dead,” ACFO Abdullahi confirmed.

The bodies of the victims were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, Kabiru Magawata.

While the Fire Service team was commended for their prompt response, the unfortunate outcome serves as a cautionary reminder of the risks involved in rescue attempts without proper training or equipment.
