The Kano State Police Command has charged a 19-year-old, Ibrahim Abubakar, for attempting to take his own life after he climbed a tall billboard and threatened to jump. The teenager reportedly made the demand that certain TikTok celebrities he follows must appear before he would come down.
The incident occurred on Monday at Gadar Lado along Zaria Road in Kano. Abubakar, who hails from Adamawa State, sparked concern as he scaled the structure and refused to descend, causing panic among residents and drawing a large crowd.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed in a statement on Friday that the suspect had been arraigned before Magistrate Court No. 5 in the Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano on a charge of attempted suicide.
Speaking to Arewa PUNCH, Kiyawa said, “Ibrahim Abubakar was brought before Magistrate Court Number 5 in Gyadi-Gyadi following his rescue by law enforcement officers.”
He had earlier revealed that officers safely brought the teenager down and took him to a hospital for medical assessment. “We also provided him with food because he had gone a long time without eating,” Kiyawa added.
The event has stirred conversations around mental health and the growing influence of social media among young people.
The case is currently ongoing, with further proceedings expected in the coming days.
