Portuguese football star Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a fatal car accident in Spain, at the age of 28. The news, first reported by Spanish outlet Marca, has not yet been officially confirmed by Liverpool FC or the Portuguese Football Federation as at the time of reporting this.

Jota, born Diogo José Teixeira da Silva on December 4, 1996, was traveling with his younger brother, André Silva, when their vehicle veered off the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora province and burst into flames. Both brothers were reportedly pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred in the early hours of July 3, 2025—just 10 days after Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso.

Jota had been enjoying a break in Spain after a successful season with Liverpool, where he played a crucial role in the club’s Premier League triumph for the 2024–25 season. Known for his versatility, sharp finishing, and relentless pressing, Jota made 131 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 56 goals and winning multiple domestic trophies, including the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Community Shield.

Before his time in England, Jota’s career began in Portugal with Paços de Ferreira, followed by stints at Atlético Madrid (who signed him but never fielded him), FC Porto (on loan), and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he became a key figure during their promotion and Premier League campaigns.

Internationally, Jota earned over 35 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the 2019 UEFA Nations League and represented his country in the UEFA Euro 2020 and World Cup qualifiers.

Away from the pitch, Jota was known for his humble nature, deep Christian faith, and love for gaming. He was a top-ranked FIFA player and the founder of his own esports team, Luna Galaxy. He and Rute Cardoso, his childhood sweetheart, had three children together.

His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the football world. Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and teammates who remember him not only as a gifted footballer but as a devoted father, husband, and man of character.

As the world awaits official confirmation and statements from his club and country, Jota’s legacy as one of football’s most respected professionals remains firmly intact.
