A well-known TikTok personality, Umar Hashim, widely recognized by his online alias Tsulange, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Magistrate Court in Kano State for engaging in indecent behavior.
The verdict was delivered by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan at the Gyadi Gyadi court, where Hashim was found guilty of public misconduct. The case was initiated by the Kano State Censorship Board.
However, the court offered an alternative to imprisonment, allowing Hashim to pay a fine of ₦80,000 in place of serving the jail term. In addition, he was directed to pay ₦20,000 to the Censorship Board to cover the costs of investigation and prosecution.
Hashim’s arrest in June 2025 followed a controversial skit in which he appeared bathing on a public road while dressed in women’s underwear. The act was considered offensive and contrary to public morals.
The ruling reflects the state’s stance on preserving cultural and moral values and underscores the legal boundaries surrounding online content. The case also reignites discussions around freedom of expression, particularly for digital creators, and the extent to which regulatory agencies should intervene.
