The Igbo Delegates Assembly has raised serious concern over the recurring attacks on farmers in the South-East by suspected violent herders, urging immediate and collective intervention to address the worsening security crisis.

In a communiqué released after its second quarterly meeting in Abuja, and made available to South-East PUNCH on Monday, the group strongly condemned the ongoing violence. It called on the governors of the South-East states and security agencies to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property in the region.

The communiqué, signed by the Assembly’s President-General, Chief Kenneth Okeugo, also extended condolences to victims affected by the recent flood in Mokwa, Niger State, and those killed in Yelewata, Benue State.

“We strongly condemn the persistent and brutal killings across Igboland and other parts of the country, carried out by armed herdsmen and criminal gangs who destroy communities and murder innocent citizens without sufficient intervention from security agencies responsible for public protection,” the statement read.

The Assembly sympathized with the government and people of Niger State over the flood disaster and urged the authorities to provide swift relief and implement long-term strategies to prevent future occurrences.

In a push for economic revitalization, the group encouraged Igbo business leaders to prioritize investing in their homeland. They urged the commencement of industrialization efforts within the region to stimulate employment for the youth and promote regional development.

“We urge Igbo entrepreneurs to intentionally channel their investments into the South-East,” the communiqué added. “The industrial development of the region is essential to job creation and economic progress for our people.”

The group also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts in enhancing security in the South-East, particularly in addressing the threats posed by unknown gunmen. They appealed for further strengthening of the country’s security framework to ensure complete elimination of such threats both in the region and other vulnerable parts of the country.

In conclusion, the Assembly reaffirmed its alliance with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, pledging full support to the group’s leadership under Senator John Azuta-Mbata and commending its role in promoting Igbo unity and interests.
