A 56-year-old farmer was killed in the Miango community of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, following an alleged attack by suspected Fulani herders.
The victim’s son, Stephen, confirmed the incident to City Round in Jos on Friday, recounting the tragic circumstances surrounding his father’s death.
According to Stephen, his father had gone to his farm on Thursday to inspect his millet crops. Upon arrival, he discovered that cattle, reportedly belonging to Fulani herders, were grazing on the farmland, destroying the crops in the process.
Stephen explained, “It happened around 5 p.m. on Thursday. My father went to the farm and saw some herdsmen with their cows grazing and damaging the crops. When he approached them to ask that they take their animals away, they attacked him.”
He continued, “They used knives to cut him severely and left him lying in a pool of blood. That’s how he lost his life.”
Stephen also expressed concern over the slow response from the security agencies. “Some people reported the incident to security operatives immediately after my father was killed, but it wasn’t until this morning (Friday) that they came to our house,” he said.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful, as his mobile line was unavailable at the time of reporting.
Meanwhile, local residents have urged both the state police authorities and the Special Military Taskforce responsible for peacekeeping in the region to thoroughly investigate the killing and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
