The confrontation between Ibom Air and passenger Comfort Emmanson, who was charged to court on Monday and remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting airline staff, has sparked widespread debate on social media. The incident has divided public opinion, with many Nigerians weighing in.

Viral clips from the scene show Emmanson in heated exchanges with flight attendants and airport security, while another short video—recorded by her—appears to capture her requesting to leave the aircraft. This has intensified arguments over whether the situation was mishandled.

According to Ibom Air, the dispute began in Uyo before takeoff when Emmanson allegedly refused to switch off her mobile phone despite safety instructions. The airline further alleged that upon arrival in Lagos, she assaulted a purser, posing risks to passengers, crew, and the aircraft.

However, many online commentators have accused the airline of using excessive force, with some raising concerns that her clothing was torn during the altercation, leaving her partially exposed. Others placed the blame on Emmanson, saying her actions provoked the situation.

Tunde Ibrahim, who claimed to be on the flight, alleged on Facebook that the conflict stemmed from an argument over phone usage. He said Emmanson had informed the crew her phone was in flight mode, but she was still blocked from disembarking after landing, with crew calling in airport security. He claimed she was pushed back into her seat to allow other passengers to leave.

On Twitter, Mazi Nathan (#rukky_nate) described her as “unruly” but criticised the airline for “degrading” treatment, saying the exposure of her body could be grounds for a lawsuit. Rico of Uyo (#King_Rico19) suggested there might have been prior tensions between her and the flight attendant.

Some commenters questioned whether the crew had the right to restrain her in such a manner, while others, like The Truth Speaker (#SpeakerCritical), argued that violating flight rules warranted firm action, even if force was involved.

A number of users took harsher stances, stating she had no justification for physically assaulting a crew member, while others criticised the airline for unprofessional conduct and suggested the conflict may have stemmed from a personal grudge.

Several commentators also linked the incident to the recent controversy involving a popular Fuji musician at an airport, suggesting inconsistency in how similar cases are handled.

Others mocked the situation, with remarks about her appearance during the scuffle, while some questioned why she appeared to be the last passenger leaving the aircraft in the circulating videos, implying the footage may not reflect the entire incident.

As the debate continues, Nigerians remain polarised—some see Emmanson as an aggressive passenger who broke aviation rules, while others believe she was the victim of an unnecessarily forceful response from Ibom Air staff.
