Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has expressed deep sadness over the death of one of its students during a sign-out celebration held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso.

The institution explained that it had, since 2023, placed a total ban on sign-out activities within its premises and had officially warned hotels and hospitality outlets in and around Ogbomoso not to host such events for its students.

Initial reports indicated that a group of students ignored this directive and organised a sign-out ceremony on the football pitch at the Wazo Ultramodern Market. During the event, a male student was reportedly shot. He left the scene on his motorcycle but collapsed along the way and was later found unresponsive.

Upon receiving an alert, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs went to the location and contacted the Oyo State Police Command in Ogbomoso, including the Monitoring Unit and the Area Command. Police officers arrived promptly, and a search of the victim’s bag helped confirm his identity as Mr. Babalola Marvelous Olanrewaju, a 300-level student of Mechanical Engineering. His body was taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital mortuary.

The university is working with the police on the ongoing investigation and has informed the deceased’s family.

The management offered its condolences to his family, friends, and fellow students, praying for his soul to rest in peace and for strength for his loved ones during this period of loss.
