General Christopher Musa urges Nigerians to acquire self-defense skills amid escalating insecurity, highlighting safety awareness as a vital life necessity.
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on citizens to acquire self-defense skills as a vital means of safeguarding themselves against rising security threats.
In an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, cited by BBC Hausa, Musa stressed the need for preparedness, noting that security risks have become an unavoidable reality in the country.
Several regions across Nigeria continue to suffer severe attacks from armed groups, leading to mass killings, abductions, and the displacement of entire communities, particularly in the northwest, northeast, and central zones.
Responding to a question on whether citizens should be trained in combat techniques, Musa stated:
“Self-defense should be regarded as a basic life skill—just like driving or swimming. Whether during times of conflict or peace, it is essential to know how to stay safe.”
He further emphasized the importance of security awareness, saying that every Nigerian should understand how to protect themselves and respond to threats effectively.
The call for self-defense training comes amid fresh violence. On Monday, gunmen attacked a mosque in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least 28 worshippers. Last month, kidnappers in neighboring Zamfara State executed 38 hostages.
