A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, causing several carriages to overturn and prompting passengers to flee in fear.

The incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11:00 a.m. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers rushing out of the damaged coaches to safety.

One passenger who witnessed the derailment said, “It was sudden and terrifying. People were running in different directions, not knowing what would happen next. We just hope everyone makes it out alive.”

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation, stating that rescue operations were already underway at the site. However, he declined to provide further details, noting that the situation was still being assessed.

While the cause of the derailment has not yet been determined, there were no confirmed reports of casualties at the time of filing this report.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line remains one of Nigeria’s busiest train routes, serving hundreds of passengers daily. The line has faced previous incidents, including a deadly terrorist attack in March 2022, which resulted in several fatalities and abductions.
