The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old woman, identified as Lilian, for allegedly stabbing her partner to death during a fight at the Ijanpa Road area of Delta State.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement on his official X handle on Wednesday.
Investigations revealed that Lilian had been living with the deceased, a 34-year-old man, for about four years. Their relationship began when she was 17, and they had two children together.
According to Edafe, the suspect admitted that an argument escalated into violence after the man told her he wanted to end the relationship. She alleged that he beat her with a cane and hit her head against the ground, which led her to grab a knife from the kitchen. When he moved towards her again, she stabbed him in the chest despite warning him to stay back.
Speaking further during interrogation, Lilian explained:
“We have two sons, three and two years old. On Monday, I asked him to collect our meter from a neighbor so we could recharge electricity, but he ignored me. We argued, and he began flogging me. Later, he smashed my head on the ground. Out of anger and fear, I ran to the kitchen for a knife and stabbed him. I regret what happened, and I am not happy that he is gone.”
SP Edafe confirmed that Lilian will be charged with murder and urged Nigerians to control their emotions during conflicts to prevent such tragic outcomes.
This case comes just weeks after another reported incident in which a man, known as “Doctor,” allegedly stabbed his lover, Ima, to death following accusations of infidelity.
