A man identified as Abideen has approached a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of his marriage to his wife, Bashirat. He accused her of disobedience, constant quarrelling and threatening to attack him with acid.
According to Abideen, his wife frequently defies him at home, argues over minor issues and publicly embarrasses him by shouting during disagreements. He said her alleged behaviour has caused tension with their neighbours, who now consider them a nuisance.
Abideen further told the court that Bashirat’s alleged acid threat forced him to leave their home for his safety. He also requested custody of their children.
Bashirat, however, denied threatening her husband or disrespecting him. She agreed to end the marriage but rejected his request for custody, insisting that Abideen cannot adequately care for the children.
She accused her husband of irresponsibility, claiming she has been solely feeding the family and sponsoring their children’s education through her business income. Bashirat also stated that Abideen forced her to wear a hijab and fully cover her body, a decision she said he never mentioned before their relationship turned serious.
“My husband did not pay any bride price,” she told the court. “He impregnated me while we were dating, and I moved in with him. Since then, I have been the one providing for our home.”
After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Mrs. S. M. Akintayo, adjourned the case for further hearing.
