The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being ambushed by armed men in Osogbo on Monday night.

According to a statement released by the corps’ spokesperson, Abass Yusuf, the attack happened around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel. Omoyele was reportedly driving home alone after official duties when the assailants opened fire on his vehicle, leaving it riddled with bullets.

Yusuf described the incident as “deeply concerning,” noting that it appeared to be a coordinated attempt on the commander’s life. He further revealed that the attackers, numbering about 15 and wearing masks, also invaded Omoyele’s private residence the same night. Witnesses said they arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.

“The assault on the Amotekun commander is not just an attack on one person, but on the very symbol of our local security structure,” Yusuf stated.

He added that Omoyele sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment under tight security at an undisclosed hospital. The matter has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and an investigation is underway.

Yusuf urged residents to stay calm and report any suspicious activities to security agencies for immediate response.

Meanwhile, this attack comes shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered a full-scale investigation into a recent incident in which Amotekun operatives were accused of killing some residents of Akinlalu Community. The governor has sent a high-level delegation to the community to uncover the facts surrounding that case.
