The Federal Government has instructed vice-chancellors of all federal universities to implement the “no work, no pay” rule against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who are currently on strike.
According to Daily Post, the lecturers embarked on industrial action following the government’s failure to address several unresolved demands made by the union.
The directive was issued in a circular dated October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
The circular stated:
“In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its commitment to enforcing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for any employee who neglects official duties during a strike.”
Copies of the circular were sent to key government offices and officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Pro-Chancellors of federal universities, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The move underscores the government’s stance that salaries will not be paid to any academic staff who fail to perform their duties during the ongoing industrial action.
