A woman, Mumuni, has brought her husband, Isiaka, before the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, alleging negligence, excessive drinking, and smoking.
She told the court that she bore the financial burden of their home because her husband failed to provide for her and their children. According to her, Isiaka spent most of his time at beer parlours, where he drank heavily and smoked excessively.
Mumuni said her biggest concern was that her husband often took their two sons to these joints. She stated that the children, after watching their father and his friends smoke and drink, began rolling paper, lighting it, and pretending to smoke at home.
She explained that she left the marriage after she could no longer endure his behaviour. She added that Isiaka often claimed he had no money when she requested funds for their children’s upkeep but always had enough to spend on alcohol and cigarettes.
She pleaded for full custody of their children and asked the court to compel her husband to take responsibility for their feeding, education, and healthcare. She also requested a restraining order to prevent him from threatening or disturbing her.
Despite receiving court summonses, Isiaka failed to appear.
The court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered that another hearing notice be served.
