Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that winning elections requires more than online popularity, insisting that social media activity alone cannot determine electoral outcomes.
Shettima made the statement on Friday during the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. He said anyone hoping to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election would need far more than digital campaigns or sentimental appeals.
According to the Vice President, challenging Tinubu in 2027 would be unrealistic given the President’s political experience and track record, although he acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic system allows anyone to contest.
He warned politicians against exaggerating the power of platforms such as Facebook and X, stressing that elections are decided through deliberate political organisation, not online excitement.
“Elections are not won through noise or nostalgia. They are not conducted on social media platforms. They are won through strong alliances, credibility, and firm conviction,” Shettima said.
He added that the APC is approaching the 2027 elections with confidence, noting that Tinubu’s depth of experience gives the party a solid advantage.
“With the experience of our President guiding us and lessons from the past shaping our approach, 2027 is not a gamble for us. It is a responsibility we are prepared to shoulder,” he said.
Shettima urged party leaders to remain focused on grassroots mobilisation and governance, emphasizing that sustained performance and unity, rather than online trends, would determine success at the polls.
