The Delta State Police Command has arrested five individuals, including the community leader and chief organiser of the Ozoro festival, over the alleged assault of women during the event.

The police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrests in a post, identifying the community head as Omorede Sunday. He stated that four other suspects from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro were also taken into custody.

According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has directed that the suspects be transferred immediately to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. He assured that all those involved in the incident would be apprehended and prosecuted.

The arrests followed widespread outrage over viral videos showing groups of young men allegedly attacking women during the festival, tearing their clothes and subjecting them to various forms of abuse. The incident reportedly occurred on March 19 during the annual celebration, where women are said to be expected to remain indoors, with those outside becoming targets.

There were also unverified claims that some victims may have suffered more serious forms of assault.

Earlier, Edafe had described the incident as shocking and unacceptable, stressing that no cultural practice should override the fundamental rights of individuals. He also urged witnesses to provide useful information to aid the investigation.

The Delta State Government also condemned the incident. The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the acts as barbaric and called on security agencies to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.

He further urged community leaders and festival organisers to put adequate safety measures in place to prevent similar incidents, while reiterating the government’s zero tolerance for gender-based violence.

The incident has sparked strong reactions on social media, with many users demanding justice and calling for an end to practices that violate human rights.
