The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned that the administration of President Bola Tinubu should be held accountable if any harm comes to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai while in government custody.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the statement during an interview on Symfoni TV, alleging that El-Rufai’s continued detention is politically motivated rather than based on any proven criminal offence.
According to Abdullahi, if El-Rufai had committed any crime, it should be the courts—not the government—that determine his guilt or innocence through due legal process.
He argued that the prolonged detention suggests an attempt to prevent the former governor from participating in the political process and strengthening the opposition ahead of future elections.
The ADC spokesperson further claimed that the government’s actions were driven by political considerations rather than justice, insisting that El-Rufai should not be held indefinitely without a judicial determination of his case.
Abdullahi also recalled El-Rufai’s role in supporting Tinubu’s presidential ambition, stating that the former Kaduna governor stood firmly behind him during the APC presidential succession despite opposition from some members of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.
