The Oyo State Government has approved ₦235 billion for the construction of the second phase of the Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja Circular Road, spanning 39 kilometres.
The approval was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, during a State Executive Council briefing at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The circular road project has recently sparked a series of peaceful protests by residents in parts of Ibadan and surrounding areas, including Ido, Lagelu, Ona Ara, Akinyele, Oluyole and Egbeda local government areas. The demonstrations, staged by communities affected by the project, caused traffic congestion and disruptions in several locations.
Mogbonjubola said the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to completing the second phase of the project, noting that the approved ₦235 billion would ensure its delivery within 18 months, before the end of the current administration.
He also disclosed that the council approved ₦55 billion for the rehabilitation of inner roads in Ogbomosho to improve mobility and infrastructure in the area.
In another briefing, the Commissioner for Energy, Dahud Shangodoyin, revealed that approval was granted for the installation of solar-powered streetlights along the Orita-Aperin to Olorunsogo corridor to enhance night-time visibility and security. He added that the council also approved backup power projects, including solar and hybrid generators, for Onipepeye and Odogbo Barracks at costs of ₦348 million and ₦231 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Health, Olorunserimi Ajetumobi, alongside the Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, announced that ₦389 million was approved for the supply of beddings to 58 secondary healthcare facilities across the state.
They further stated that the council gave approval for the commencement of operations of the Ikara Farms Special Purpose Vehicle at Ilero in the Oke-Ogun area through a private investor. According to Akin-Funmilayo, the initiative is expected to create about 100,000 direct and indirect jobs while significantly boosting agricultural production in Oyo State.
