Residents of Sagamu in Ogun State have appealed to former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, not to stop visiting his hometown following the tragic road accident that led to the death of two of his close associates.

The accident happened on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Joshua survived the crash, but two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, lost their lives when their Lexus SUV rammed into a parked truck.

In the aftermath of the incident, concerns emerged that the boxer might avoid returning to Nigeria because of the trauma. However, many Sagamu residents have urged him to remain connected to his roots and not allow fear to separate him from his people.

Speaking on the matter, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, said the family had accepted the tragedy with faith. He explained that emotional reactions were expected after such a painful experience but maintained that Sagamu would always be an integral part of Joshua’s life.

According to him, the boxer’s bond with his hometown remains strong despite the unfortunate incident.

A Sagamu indigene, Adeniji Taiwo, also encouraged Joshua to continue visiting home, acknowledging that fear may exist but insisting it should not keep him away. He described the boxer as a source of pride to the community and stressed that accidents can occur anywhere, not just in Nigeria.

Another resident, a commercial motorcyclist identified as Mr Taiwo, said Joshua’s visits inspire many young people in Sagamu. He noted that the boxer serves as a role model to local youths and that his absence would be deeply felt.

Mrs Florence Kehinde, who also shared her thoughts, expressed sympathy over the loss of Joshua’s friends. She appealed to him not to withdraw from the community, saying his presence brings joy and pride to the people of Sagamu.

Similarly, Segun Adebiyi urged the boxer to overcome any fear linked to the accident. He pointed out that road accidents are a global issue and reassured Joshua that he would always be welcomed warmly whenever he returns home.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver involved in the crash has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu. He is facing several charges, including dangerous driving, reckless driving, and causing death. The case has been adjourned to January 20.

Anthony Joshua, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, was in Nigeria on holiday after securing a knockout victory in his recent boxing match in the United States.
