Six final-year nursing students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have lost their lives in a tragic road accident while travelling to Ogbomoso, Oyo State, to write their final examinations.
The victims were 500-level students in the university’s Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme. They were reportedly on their way to complete the last stage of their academic programme when the crash occurred.
One of the deceased students was said to be heavily pregnant at the time of the accident, deepening the grief surrounding the incident.
Their remains have been deposited in a mortuary pending autopsy and further official procedures.
The tragic development has left the university community in mourning, with classmates and colleagues struggling to come to terms with the loss. The students were described as practicing nurses who balanced their professional responsibilities with their academic pursuits, managing demanding schedules in both their workplaces and studies.
As of the time of this report, the management of LAUTECH had not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances of the crash. Similarly, the Oyo State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps had yet to release formal information regarding the cause of the accident.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about the rising number of road accidents across Nigeria, with factors such as road conditions and other safety challenges frequently cited as contributing causes.
