The political landscape in Oyo State is becoming increasingly active ahead of the 2027 governorship election, following a recent directive by Governor Seyi Makinde.
During an event with Muslim faithful at the Agodi Government House, Makinde granted members of his cabinet the freedom to pursue elective positions, while encouraging them to openly identify with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This move has triggered a wave of political activity, with several aspirants beginning to signal their interest.
Shortly after the announcement, campaign billboards of key figures, including Bimbo Adekanmbi and Nurein Aderemi Adeniran, appeared across Ibadan, indicating their intention to contest for the state’s top office once Makinde completes his tenure.
Amid the growing list of aspirants, attention has also focused on Segun Ogunwuyi, whose silence regarding the race has drawn interest from political observers. Despite not publicly declaring his ambition, Ogunwuyi is widely regarded as a strong contender due to his extensive experience in both legislative and executive roles.
Ogunwuyi previously served in the Oyo State House of Assembly between 2011 and 2015 before moving to the House of Representatives in 2015, where he represented his constituency. His political journey continued under the Makinde administration, where he was appointed Executive Assistant on Investment and later became Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency.
During his tenure, he was credited with revitalising key state assets, including the Pace Setter Quarry and Asphalt Plant in Ijaiye, and driving investment-focused initiatives.
He was later appointed Chief of Staff to the governor, a role in which he has played a central part in coordinating government activities and managing both administrative and political affairs. His tenure is noted as one of the longest in that position within the state.
In addition, Ogunwuyi has chaired several important committees, covering areas such as infrastructure development, economic recovery programmes, and major state events.
Political analysts note that his close working relationship with Governor Makinde and his involvement in key policy implementations position him as a potential successor capable of sustaining the administration’s policies.
As the 2027 election approaches, the question of who will emerge as the next leader of Oyo State remains open, with Ogunwuyi’s next move expected to play a significant role in shaping the contest.
