Popular Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has issued a public apology to Nigerians after facing backlash over comments in which he praised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and dismissed concerns about insecurity in the country.
The controversy began after Afolayan shared a video suggesting that reports of insecurity were exaggerated. He also appeared unconcerned about the rising cost of living, stating that the situation did not affect him personally because he was doing well financially. In the same video, he commended the government’s diplomatic efforts, particularly the resolution of visa restrictions involving the United Arab Emirates.
His remarks drew widespread criticism online, with many Nigerians accusing him of being out of touch with the realities facing ordinary citizens.
In response, the actor released another video in which he expressed regret, appearing visibly remorseful as he asked for forgiveness. He admitted that the criticism he received was overwhelming and acknowledged that the government had not done enough to address insecurity.
Afolayan also shared a personal experience, revealing that the mother of a close friend had recently been kidnapped and only released after a ransom was paid. He said this incident made it impossible for him to deny the seriousness of the security situation.
Clarifying his earlier comments, he explained that he did not intend to dismiss the issue but was trying to discourage people from spreading misleading narratives.
He concluded by announcing that he would step away from political discussions, stating that he no longer wishes to be involved in matters related to politics.
