The Jigawa State Police have arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for reportedly setting his 60-year-old father on fire in Kazaure Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Shi’isu Adam confirmed the incident, explaining that initial investigations indicate Nuhu poured a flammable substance, believed to be petrol, on his father and ignited it. The attack occurred on April 1, 2026, around 6:30 a.m. in Magama Quarters, Kazaure town.
“The victim was engulfed in flames, and our team responded promptly after receiving a report from Lokon Malamai,” Adam said. He added that Nuhu sustained fresh burns and injuries to his forehead, arms, and toes during the incident.
The victim was taken to a hospital but unfortunately died while receiving treatment. Nuhu now faces charges of patricide, a severe offense under Nigerian law.
Adam confirmed that the suspect is in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and prosecution.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, Haruna Yahaya, condemned the act and assured the public that authorities are investigating the motive. He urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully and report any domestic violence or conflicts to nearby police stations.
The police also appealed to the public for calm and cooperation as the investigation continues and called on anyone with relevant information to come forward. The state command emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order throughout Jigawa.
