Suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an early morning attack on Awapul, a community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, destroying several homes and shops.

The assault reportedly occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, with gunmen arriving in large numbers and firing repeatedly before setting properties ablaze. Authorities confirmed that although there was extensive damage, no lives were lost in the incident.

According to the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, the attackers were believed to be members of Boko Haram. He noted that the operation resulted in significant destruction but did not record any fatalities.

Residents said the attackers moved on motorcycles and remained in the area for over an hour, burning buildings and causing panic. Some affected individuals have since fled to nearby areas, including Chibok town, seeking safety.

Community members called on the government to strengthen security in the area, stressing that their primary need is protection to enable them to carry out their daily activities without fear.

The incident followed closely on the heels of another attack in the state, where insurgents targeted an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Damasak and a police facility in Nganzai. In that attack, several structures were damaged, including part of a police station, and an armoured vehicle was set on fire. Security operatives were able to repel the assault, though casualties were recorded among personnel.

In a separate incident around the same period, another attack on an IDP camp led to the destruction of multiple shelters and the death of a local security volunteer.

Security agencies have continued efforts to prevent further attacks and maintain vigilance across vulnerable communities in the state.
