A 65-year-old farmer, Kehinde Joseph Ojo, has lost his life following an alleged attack by suspected herdsmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Igbo Pupa in Yawota, near Alawusa in the Ogbomoso axis. Reports indicate that the farmer had gone to his farmland in the evening to check on his cassava crops when he encountered a group of herders.
Sources said the herders requested permission to graze their cattle on the farm, but the request was declined by the farmer. This reportedly led to a confrontation that escalated into violence, during which he was attacked with machetes and left critically injured.
He was immediately taken to a hospital in Ogbomoso for treatment but later died in the early hours of Monday, April 6.
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the killing. The matter was first reported at the divisional police headquarters in Ikoyi-Ile, the administrative centre of Oriire Local Government Area.
Residents have expressed concern over the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the region, calling for stronger security measures to prevent further incidents.
