The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the detention of some of its personnel following a physical confrontation with soldiers in Bayelsa State during the visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The incident, which circulated widely on social media, was captured in a short video showing uniformed officers engaging in a heated argument that escalated into a fight. In the footage, a Naval Police driver steps out of a Hilux vehicle and exchanges words with another driver.
Shortly after returning to his vehicle, a soldier—armed with a rifle—approaches and strikes the Naval Police officer, triggering a wider clash between personnel from both sides.
The situation quickly turned chaotic, with officers exchanging blows in public view while bystanders watched in shock.
The altercation reportedly occurred as the President was departing from an official event in the state. However, the exact cause of the disagreement remains unclear.
Reacting to the development, the Navy’s spokesperson, Captain Abi Folorunso, stated that those involved have been taken into custody and are currently facing disciplinary action in line with military regulations.
He added that appropriate administrative procedures are already underway to address the misconduct and ensure accountability.
