The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, over the killing of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan.
In a statement released on Sunday, the police said the incident took place on April 11, 2026, in Adigun Village, located within the Olorunda Ogunsola area. The victim was identified as Mutiyatu Sunday.
According to the police, intelligence reports indicated that the child had been unlawfully killed, and the suspect was found at the scene with the victim’s remains. Acting on this information, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed officers to immediately move to the location.
On arrival, officers faced hostility from a group of residents but managed to handle the situation calmly. They prevented the mob from harming the suspect, took him into custody, and secured evidence linked to the case.
Preliminary findings suggest that the suspect was responsible for the child’s death. Police said he later admitted involvement during questioning.
Authorities also revealed that the suspect sustained injuries during the mob attack and was taken for medical treatment. He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the police commissioner condemned mob justice, stressing that such actions interfere with proper legal procedures. He assured residents that the case would be thoroughly handled and justice pursued.
The police further urged the public to report suspicious activities promptly, reaffirming their commitment to protecting lives and maintaining security across the state.
