Residents of communities in Katsina State have reportedly fled their homes after armed bandits imposed new financial demands, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the region.
The group, said to be loyal to Isiya Kwashen Garwa, allegedly ordered residents of Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni in Bakori Local Government Area to pay ₦10 million each. The development comes months after authorities and community leaders had reached peace agreements aimed at restoring stability.
According to local security updates, the renewed levies have created widespread fear, forcing many residents to abandon their communities to avoid potential attacks. The situation has also highlighted weaknesses in enforcing earlier truce arrangements.
Affected residents now face a difficult situation—either comply with the demands or risk violent reprisals. Despite previous assurances of peace, reports indicate that extortion, kidnappings, and attacks have continued in the area.
Security analysts say the incident raises serious questions about the effectiveness and sustainability of negotiated settlements with armed groups in Nigeria’s northwest region.
