Two people have lost their lives following a violent clash between suspected hoodlums in the Agege area of Lagos. The incident, which involved rival groups, reportedly began as a dispute on Sunday and escalated into widespread violence on Monday. The unrest affected several parts of the community, including Ibido Street, Oke-Koto, Papa, Agbotikuyo, and Sofunde, forcing residents and business owners to flee.
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Tolu, said fear spread quickly as a large number of youths engaged in a fight using dangerous weapons. According to him, traders shut their shops in a hurry while passersby and residents ran for safety.
Another resident, Abiola Kudirat, recounted that the situation became more alarming when a woman and her four children were reportedly attacked while returning from a Murakat prayer during the fasting period. She alleged that the attackers seized the woman’s phone and harassed her family. Her son, who resisted, was stabbed and later taken to the hospital.
Kudirat described the environment as chaotic, adding that many people abandoned their daily activities as the violence intensified. She noted that by the time she reached Iyana Ipaja, the entire area was already in confusion, likening the situation to a war zone.
A video from the scene showed groups of hoodlums moving through the area during the clash.
An anti-cultism group, Confra Naija, suggested in a post that the violence may be cult-related. The group identified the deceased only by the nicknames “Suskid” and “Ika Chicken,” stating that one victim was killed on Sunday night while the other died during Monday’s confrontation.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identities of the victims or the exact cause of the clash. Repeated incidents of violence in parts of Agege have continued to raise concerns among residents about safety in the area.
Efforts to obtain a response from the police were unsuccessful, as spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi did not reply to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.
