More than 50 construction workers narrowly escaped death after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Umuoma village, Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to witnesses, the building, reportedly intended for hotel business, came crashing down around 4pm after workers had spent the day working on the site.
Residents in the area alleged that the materials used for the project were substandard, particularly the iron rods, which they claimed were not suitable for a multi-storey structure.
Some witnesses also blamed the speed of construction, alleging that blocks and structural components were not given enough time to properly dry and solidify before additional work continued on the building.
Fortunately, no casualty was recorded, as none of the workers was trapped during the collapse.
Following the incident, officials of the Anambra State Urban Planning Authority sealed off the premises, while workers were seen moving their belongings out of the compound.
A resident who spoke anonymously praised the quick intervention of the authorities, noting that the situation could have been far worse if people had been trapped beneath the rubble.
