A tragic pipeline explosion in Obitti community, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, claimed the lives of five vandals, as confirmed by the Imo State Police Command on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Tuesday, and the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Henry Okoye, conveyed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Aboki Danjuma, has initiated an investigative team to determine the cause of the explosion and apprehend those responsible. The vandals, attempting their usual pipeline theft, faced a devastating outcome, with five individuals burnt beyond recognition. ASP Okoye emphasized the collaborative effort with other security agencies to identify and bring to justice those involved in this economic sabotage. The goal is to prevent similar incidents in the future, addressing the pervasive issue of pipeline vandalism. An anonymous source revealed that the vandals had infiltrated the Obitti Rubber Estate, digging through an oil pipeline with an articulated vehicle. They connected a long pipe to their tanker to siphon oil, leading to the catastrophic explosion. The source described witnessing numerous casualties and reported that the ensuing fire, lasting for hours, not only consumed the tanker but also inflicted considerable damage on farm produce worth millions of naira. This unfortunate event echoes a previous tragedy in April 2022, where over 100 lives were lost in a similar explosion at an illegal oil refining site in Ohaji/Egbema. Additionally, on May 4 of the same year, two individuals lost their lives in a suspected bomb attack at the Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Ltd. oil facility in Izombe, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo. The recurrence of such incidents underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address safety concerns surrounding oil infrastructure in the region.
