One person has been killed, another abducted, and several residents injured after suspected terrorists attacked Wande community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Wednesday night.
Drivetvnews gathered that the latest assault has heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in Kwara South, where residents say repeated attacks by armed groups have forced many communities to flee their homes.
A source familiar with the incident said the attackers invaded Wande community, opened fire on residents, and fled with one abducted victim after leaving casualties behind.
According to the source, one resident was killed during the attack, another was kidnapped, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The source, who survived the attack, said he suffered a serious head injury after being struck with the butt of a gun by the assailants.
“They hit me on the head with the butt of their gun. Blood has been coming out from my head. The person they shot is being taken to a hospital in Igbaja,” the source said.
Residents described the incident as another indication of the deteriorating security situation across Kwara South, noting that many villages have been deserted due to persistent attacks by armed groups.
A senior security source disclosed that the attackers were believed to be members of a terrorist group that had earlier engaged security operatives in Yaru town before fleeing towards Wande community.
According to the source, security forces launched an operation against the group in Yaru on Wednesday morning, forcing the terrorists to retreat before carrying out the deadly attack in Wande later that night.
“It was obvious because security operatives pushed them out of Yaru yesterday morning. They escaped towards Wande,” the security source said.
The latest attack comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Kwara State.
Earlier, the Iru Ẹ̀kún Security Network, a security outfit linked to Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Igboho, alleged that Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq prevented the group from visiting the state despite the escalating security challenges in Kwara South.
The group claimed its planned visit, aimed at meeting members already operating in Kwara State, was suspended after the governor allegedly opposed the trip.
