Members of non-academic staff unions at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have brought activities to a standstill by commencing a seven-day warning strike over withheld salaries.

Participating unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions, and National Association of Academic Technologists of UNILAG, staged a peaceful protest at the school’s gate. They blocked vehicular movement and disrupted traffic flow while singing and displaying placards to express grievances with the Federal Government over withheld salaries.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU had been advocating for government attention to their exclusion from salary payments since February when the Academic Staff Union of Universities received payment. The withholding of their salaries stemmed from the ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ invoked during the strikes led by ASUU, SSANU, and NAATS in 2022.

Additionally, NAATS initiated a three-day warning strike on the same day.

In a separate development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protested the planned national convention of the Labour Party, alleging that National Chairman Julius Abure planned to hold a “secret” convention without stakeholder input. The NLC accused Abure of attempting to undermine the party and demanded his removal. Despite their protest, the workers were denied entry to the party’s Secretariat by the Nigeria Police Force.
