Former President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that he did not accumulate wealth through corrupt means during his time in office. He also highlighted the challenges of governing Nigeria due to its complexities.
Speaking in Hausa during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Government House in Katsina State on Saturday, Buhari addressed the audience ahead of the upcoming local government elections in the state.
The former president pointed out that many Nigerians do not fully grasp the difficulties of running the country and are quick to criticize their leaders both during and after their terms in office. Expressing enthusiasm at the gathering, Buhari revealed that he owns only three houses, located in Daura, Katsina State, and Kaduna State, and emphasized that he could not be accused of illicit enrichment during his tenure.
“Nigeria is a challenging country to govern, and most people don’t realize this. You can only understand the complexities of leadership and the nation when you find yourself in a position of authority,” Buhari said.
He further added, “I feel and look healthier now than I did while serving as president. People who see me now often say I look better than before.
“After eight years as a civilian president, I only own three houses—one in Daura and two in Kaduna. One of these properties is rented out, which provides me with income for my daily needs,” he concluded.
