The Public Relations Officer of the State Police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a statement in Awka on Thursday detailing a tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in the Ogidi community, located in Idemili North Local Government Area.
According to SP Ikenga, the State Police Command has taken control of the scene as part of its response efforts.
Upon receiving an emergency call, officers from the Ogidi Division promptly arrived at the location. The lifeless bodies of the affected children were recovered and transported to a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The children’s mother, who is believed to have eaten the same meal, is currently hospitalized in critical condition and receiving intensive medical treatment.
As part of the initial investigation, the police collected samples of the suspected food and sent them for forensic examination to identify the precise cause of the incident.
Additionally, officers are interviewing residents and potential witnesses in the area to gather more information that could assist with the ongoing inquiry.
