The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ajao Saka Adewale, has confirmed the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a correspondent with Arise News, who died while attempting to escape armed robbers in her Katampe residence.

The incident took place on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Unique Apartments, a three-storey residential complex with 18 flats in the Gishiri area of Katampe.

According to reports, armed men broke into the building at night. Two private security guards were on duty, and one sustained gunshot injuries while trying to confront the attackers. In the chaos, Maduagwu, who lived on the top floor, leapt from her apartment in a desperate bid to escape.

She was found unconscious on the ground and rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive her with CPR. Sadly, she did not survive.

Speaking on the matter, CP Adewale said:

> “When officers arrived at the scene, she was unconscious. She was immediately taken to the hospital, but despite doctors’ efforts, she passed away.”

He added that an investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), has been set up to track down the suspects.

> “We are already working on useful leads. No stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice,” he assured.

The police command extended condolences to the family of the deceased journalist, her colleagues at Arise News, and Nigerians who have been deeply affected by the tragic loss.
