Mawogi village in the Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State was thrown into mourning after armed bandits attacked the community on Sunday night, killing a youth leader and injuring his mother.
The assault, which occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight, claimed the life of Yanma Ndawodi, the community’s youth leader. His mother, Gogo Fatima, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Residents said the attackers stormed the quiet village under the cover of darkness, firing shots indiscriminately and causing widespread panic. During the invasion, five residents were kidnapped. However, three of the abducted victims managed to escape, while two others — identified as Ndagi Kudu and Hawau — remain in captivity.
A local source described the attack as horrifying and appealed to the Kwara State government and security agencies to strengthen security presence in the area to prevent future incidents.
The latest incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks across rural communities in the state.
Just days earlier, armed men invaded Idofin Odo-Ase in the Oke Ero Local Government Area, killing at least three people and forcing residents to flee their homes. Witnesses said the attackers shot sporadically and assaulted people in their houses before retreating into nearby forests.
Similarly, Efagi village, located under the Lafiagi Emirate in Edu Local Government Area, was attacked last Friday. During that assault, a man and his wife were abducted, and a member of the local vigilante group sustained injuries.
These repeated attacks highlight the worsening insecurity affecting rural communities across Kwara State, leaving residents fearful and demanding urgent government intervention.
