Suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have attacked a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) camp in Maje, a community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing one officer and setting the facility ablaze.
Eyewitnesses reported that the terrorists invaded the area late Saturday night, arriving in large numbers and opening fire indiscriminately on officers stationed at the camp.
“The attackers came heavily armed and started shooting everywhere. People fled in different directions for safety,” a resident told The PUNCH.
The assault left one Customs officer dead, while others narrowly escaped the onslaught before the terrorists burned down the building.
As of press time, neither the Kebbi State Government nor the Nigeria Customs Service headquarters had issued an official statement on the incident.
However, Muhammad Tajudeen, the Public Relations Officer of the NCS Kebbi Command, confirmed the attack. He noted that the affected officer had been taken to the hospital, adding that the official confirmation of his death would come after a doctor’s report.
“Yes, the attack happened, but we are currently at the hospital awaiting the doctor’s confirmation. Once we have the report, I’ll provide more details,” Tajudeen said.
This latest assault comes barely a week after the same terrorist group attacked Bagudo LGA, where they abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Sama’ila Bagudo, who regained his freedom after spending seven days in captivity.
