The Lagos State Police Command has detained four police officers accused of harassing a young man in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, following the circulation of a viral video showing the incident.
Drivetvnews gathered that the command also announced the disbandment of the entire tactical team to which the officers belonged.
The police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying investigations identified the officers as members of the Imota/Immortal Tactical Team operating in Ikorodu.
According to Adebisi, the officers were summoned to the office of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, on Thursday, where the decision to detain them was taken.
“The verdict was that these officers would be detained immediately, pending disciplinary proceedings. Also, the entire team will be disbanded,” she said.
Adebisi confirmed that all four officers were in custody and would face disciplinary action over the incident.
She explained that three of the officers were presented at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja, while the fourth officer remained in custody but was not paraded.
“They are presently here at the headquarters for further inquiries, and I want to assure members of the public that we will take appropriate actions against them,” the police spokesperson added.
She said Commissioner Fatai had warned officers against misconduct, stressing that the command would not tolerate impunity and expected personnel to perform their duties with integrity and humility.
The police also thanked members of the public for helping to identify the officers after the video went viral.
The command urged residents to continue reporting cases of police misconduct to enable the authorities to take appropriate action.
