Former President Muhammadu Buhari emphasized the critical role of self-reliance in food production during a recent statement following his attendance at Eid prayers alongside the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, in Katsina State. In a message conveyed by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari commended Nigerians who have turned to agriculture to counter rising food prices and secure national food security.

He urged citizens to persist in efforts towards self-sufficiency by cultivating and consuming locally produced food, stating, “I am wishing everyone a Happy Sallah. May this special festival bring joy, prosperity, and wonderful health to everyone. This is not the time to relent when we see prices going up. Let us buy what is produced in the country.”

Buhari also acknowledged the foundational work of past administrations in fostering a prosperous and stable nation. He called on youth to actively participate in nation-building, drawing inspiration from the nation’s founding fathers and regional leaders.

Reflecting on the large Eid gatherings, Buhari expressed concern about unchecked population growth, cautioning that it poses significant future challenges. “There is a need for greater discussion and awareness about this problem, as well as a need to invest more in education and health,” he added.

Nevertheless, he encouraged Nigerians to support one another in these challenging times, saying, “Considering the situation in the country, and in the spirit of the Sallah, let us help one another and be our brother’s keepers. I wish everyone a happy Sallah.”

He also praised the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a vital unifying force in Nigeria, celebrating it as one of General Yakubu Gowon’s greatest achievements. Buhari urged future administrations to continue reinforcing the program.

To mark the occasion, Buhari generously donated a cow, 10 bags of rice, and cash to the NYSC members who visited him as part of their Sallah tradition.
