Owoade has taken over the throne as the Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The coronation ceremony took place today (Saturday) at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo. Governor Seyi Makinde was present to lead the event, which was attended by numerous prominent figures, including distinguished Nigerians.
Among the dignitaries at the coronation were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
According to Drivetvnews, in anticipation of the event, the Oyo State Government had set up robust security measures, including the deployment of security personnel to key areas within Oyo and the surrounding communities.
Oba Owoade, who received the staff and instrument of office on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, ascends the throne following the death of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
Before the coronation, the new monarch completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites, which ended on Saturday, March 29.
Security arrangements were further strengthened ahead of the event to ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremony.
