The Lagos State Police Command announced on Sunday that it had apprehended a 16-year-old boy, Solomon Ibiwoye, in possession of a locally manufactured pistol in the Ebute-Ero area of Lagos.
This information was shared by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, through a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Hundeyin explained that the arrest came after concerned citizens provided a tip-off. Acting on this information, officers from the Ebute-Ero Police Division searched the suspect’s residence, where they recovered the pistol along with a cartridge.
He stated, “Credit goes to vigilant Lagosians who spotted 16-year-old Solomon Ibiwoye carrying a firearm and quietly notified the Ebute-Ero Police Division. A search of his home led to the discovery of a locally made firearm and an unspent cartridge. The investigation is ongoing. That’s one less weapon on our streets.”
Similarly, PUNCH Metro had reported in March 2018 that a 15-year-old student from Community Secondary School, Akenfa-Epie, in Bayelsa State’s Yenagoa Local Government Area, known only as Emmanuel, was found with a locally made pistol during school hours. Community members and a local vigilante group apprehended him in his school uniform and handed him over to the police.
