Despite establishing a complete DNA profile and reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, authorities have yet to identify the mother of three infants who were abandoned across East London over the past seven years. A £20,000 reward offered earlier in 2024 has also failed to yield any conclusive leads.
The Metropolitan Police are intensifying their investigation into the mysterious abandonment of the children—named Harry, Roman, and Elsa—who were discovered in 2017, 2019, and 2024 respectively, all within a few miles of each other. The latest discovery has raised concerns that a fourth baby may also be at risk.
Investigators have narrowed their focus to around 400 homes in East Ham and Plaistow, appealing to residents for voluntary DNA samples in the hope of tracing the individual responsible. Authorities believe the person who left the babies—possibly the mother—may have travelled from this specific area.
All three children were found in locations lacking CCTV coverage, leading police to believe the abandonment was carefully planned to avoid detection. Detective Inspector Jamie Humm, who is leading the investigation, stated, “We believe the person who left the babies did not want to be found.”
DI Humm expressed concern over the possibility of another child being abandoned in the future. “Given the timeline and natural pregnancy cycles, we can’t rule out the possibility of a fourth child,” he said. “If that happens, there’s no guarantee the baby will be as lucky as Elsa and her siblings.”
He emphasized that the police consider the mother a victim and suspect she may be in a dangerous or vulnerable situation. “Our working theory is that the mother is in a position where she feels unable to seek help. We are prepared to offer her all the support she needs,” he added.
Noel McHugh, a senior investigative adviser with the National Crime Agency, called the children’s survival “a miracle,” considering the harsh conditions in which they were found.
Elsa, the most recently discovered, was found in freezing temperatures on 18 January 2024. She had been left inside a reusable shopping bag, wrapped in a towel, at the junction of Greenway and High Street South in East Ham.
Roman, found in January 2019 during a cold snap, was discovered in a play area near Roman Road in Newham. The oldest, Harry, was located in September 2017 on Balaam Street in Plaistow, wrapped in a white blanket.
Roman and Harry, whose names have been changed for privacy, have since been adopted. Elsa remains under the care of authorities, and court proceedings regarding her future are ongoing. Her birth has not yet been officially registered due to the unresolved nature of the case.
Mr. McHugh confirmed that investigators are working diligently to analyze all available intelligence and urged anyone with information to come forward.
