A soldier of the Nigerian Army has been accused of assaulting a 35-year-old operative of the Amotekun Corps, Peter Samuel, in Ijeda, located in the Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State.
The Osun State Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday evening, and the victim died from his injuries in the early hours of Sunday while receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Amotekun spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, the attacker, identified only as Fiyinoluwa, was a newly enlisted soldier. Omoyele alleged that the soldier launched an unprovoked attack on the Amotekun officer.
He claimed that Fiyinoluwa, dressed in full military camouflage, approached the Amotekun post in Ijebu-Jesa and openly stated that one of his motivations for joining the military was to “deal with” members of the Amotekun Corps.
Later that evening, while Officer Peter Samuel was riding his motorcycle, the soldier—along with some unidentified individuals—allegedly ambushed him. They reportedly struck him on the head with a blunt object, causing him to fall off the motorcycle. The assault was said to have lasted for about 20 minutes without any intervention, leaving the victim unconscious and in a critical condition.
The assailants allegedly escaped the scene on a commercial motorcycle. Local Amotekun officers quickly arrived, transported the injured officer to Wesley Hospital in Ilesa, and reported the incident to the Ijebu-Jesa Divisional Police Headquarters. They also informed Lt. Col. Yunusa Isyaku at the Engineering Cantonment in Ede.
Despite medical efforts, Peter Samuel was pronounced dead on Sunday morning due to the severity of his injuries.
Omoyele stated that a thorough investigation is ongoing to uncover the full details of the incident and to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
