Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, founder of the WINGS Foundation, has reached out to families affected by the tragic children’s funfair incident that occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, in 2024.
About one year after the incident, Silekunola visited the bereaved families alongside members of her foundation, which focuses on the welfare of women and children. During the visit, she expressed sympathy with the families and presented support items in memory of the children who lost their lives.
In a video from the visit, the prophetess explained that the outreach was meant to comfort the families and reaffirm her commitment to what she described as her divine assignment, despite the painful experience surrounding the tragedy.
She noted that this year’s edition of the annual children’s funfair was deliberately redesigned as a memorial event rather than a celebration, in honour of the victims. She also offered prayers and words of encouragement, urging the families not to allow the incident to define their future.
According to her, moments of sorrow can sometimes raise difficult questions about faith, but she encouraged the families to hold on to hope and healing. She prayed that the coming year would bring renewed joy and relief from grief.
One of the parents who spoke during the visit said the families had gradually accepted what happened, stressing their belief in God’s supremacy. He added that while they did not attend the gathering with expectations, they appreciated the show of concern and solidarity.
The tragic incident occurred in 2024 when a stampede broke out during a children’s funfair in Ibadan, leading to the death of several children and injuries to others. The event was organised by Silekunola alongside Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, with the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, also mentioned in connection with the case.
In January 2025, the Oyo State Government filed an 18-count criminal charge against those linked to the event. They were initially held at the Agodi Correctional Centre in December 2024 before being granted bail the following month. The case was later struck out in March 2025.
